WHY FEED CORN & SOY? Chickens and turkeys need a balanced diet of protein and carbohydrates. It is a misconception that chickens/turkeys can sustain themselves off of only grass and bugs. Chickens & turkeys are monogastric omnivores. While they do get some calories from insects and seeds, it isn't enough to sustain them. Because they don't have rumens, they can't digest grass effectively like cows and sheep. Corn, soy, and other legumes like peas & alfalfa are commonly used in animal feed. Many take issue with corn and soy because they are commonly bioengineered plants that are heavily sprayed with pesticides. Our feed is certified organic, meaning the corn, soy, and other grains in our feed have NEVER been sprayed with toxic pesticides and they are also non-GMO. Some take issue with soy because it contains phytoestrogens (naturally-occurring estrogen-like compounds). Soy is the major protein source in animal feed. Other protein alternatives either also contain phytoestrogens (other legumes) or they have negative ecological impacts and off-putting flavors (fish meal). Phytoestrogens are not an issue unless you are directly consuming high levels (think, drinking soy milk daily.) Eating chicken that has eaten soy will not have any effect on your estrogen levels.
